"On the night following the unsuccessful attack on the Redan, Lieutenant Elphinstone commanded a party of volunteers who searched for the scaling ladders left behind after the repulse. While performing this task he also conducted a search close to the enemy for wounded men, 20 of whom he rescued and took back to the trenches."

Victoria Cross: June 18, 1855, Colour-Sergeant Peter Leitch, Royal Engineers. After approaching the Redan with the leading ladders, he formed a caponniere across the ditch as well as a ramp by fearlessly tearing down gabions from the parapet and placing and filling them until he was disabled from wounds.

Victoria Cross: June 18, 1855, deed by Lieutenant Gerald Graham, Royal Engineers, and Sapper John Perie. The pair showed determined gallantry at the head of a ladder party at the assault on the Redan at Sebastopol. Lieutenat Graham also went out on numerous occasions to bring in wounded officers and men. Perie volunteered to go with the lieutenant to help bring in a wounded sailor lying in the open, even though he was himself suffering from a musket wound in the side.
