Victoria Cross: Sgt Luke O'Connor, 23rd Regt, on 20 September 1854, at the Battle of the Alma, he was advancing between two officers, carrying the Colour, when one of them was mortally wounded. Sergeant O'Connor was also shot at the same time, but recovering himself, he snatched up the Colour from the ground and continued to carry it until the end of the action, although urged to retire to the rear on account of his wounds. Victoria Cross: Sgt James McKechnie, Scots Fusilier Guards, on 20 September 1854 at the Battle of the Alma, when the shot and fire from the batteries just in front of the battalion threw it into momentary disorder, it was forced out of its formation, becoming something of a huge triangle, with one corner pointing towards the enemy. A captain was carrying the Queen's Colour which had the pole smashed and 20 bullet holes through the silk. He held up his revolver and dashed forward, rallying the men round the Colours. He was wounded in the action.
