Victoria Cross: Private Alfred Ablett, 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards, His citation reads: 1855 during the siege of Sebastopol, Crimea, a burning shell fell into a trench containing two cases of ammunition. Private Ablett at once realising the danger to which all were exposed, seized the shell in his hands and threw it over the parapet, where it immediately exploded as it touched the ground, but not a man was touched.

Victoria Cross: In September 1855 (precise date not known), at Sevastopol, in the Crimea, when on duty, Private George Strong, Coldstream Guards, picked up a live shell which had fallen into the trench, and threw it over the parapet. He was well aware of the extreme danger involved, and his action saved many lives.
