Victoria Cross: Sgt Luke O'Connor, 23rd Regt, on 20 September 1854, at the Battle of the Alma, he was advancing between two officers, carrying the Colour, when one of them was mortally wounded. Sergeant O'Connor was also shot at the same time, but recovering himself, he snatched up the Colour from the ground and continued to carry it until the end of the action, although urged to retire to the rear on account of his wounds. He also acted with great gallantry at the assault on the Redan (8 September 1855) where he was shot through both thighs. First man of the Army to perform an action subsequently rewarded with the VC

Victoria Cross: Sgt James McKechnie, Scots Fusilier Guards, on 20 September 1854 at the Battle of the Alma, when the shot and fire from the batteries just in front of the battalion threw it into momentary disorder, it was forced out of its formation, becoming something of a huge triangle, with one corner pointing towards the enemy. A captain was carrying the Queen's Colour which had the pole smashed and 20 bullet holes through the silk. He held up his revolver and dashed forward, rallying the men round the Colours. He was wounded in the action.

Victoria Cross: citations for Capt Robert James Loyd-Lindsay, Scots Fusilier Guards. On 20 September 1854 at the Battle of the Alma, when the formation of the line of the Regiment was disordered at Alma, Captain Lindsay stood firm with the Colours, and by his example and energy, greatly tended to restore order. And 5 November at the Battle of Inkerman, at a most trying moment, he, with a few men, charged a party of Russians, driving them back, and running one through the body himself.

His actions that day also contributed toward his receiving the VC

Victoria Cross: Capt Edward William Derrington Bell, 23rd Regt, on 20 September 1854 at the Battle of Alma, he was the first to seize upon and capture one of the enemy's guns which was limbered up and being carried off. He moreover took over the command of his regiment, which he brought out of action, all his senior officers having been killed or wounded.
